    Introduction

    The MC9S12C-Family / MC9S12GC-Family are 48/52/80 pin Flash-based MCU families, which deliver

    the power and flexibility of the 16-bit core to a whole new range of cost and space sensitive, general

    purpose industrial and automotive network applications. All MC9S12C-Family / MC9S12GC-Family

    members feature standard on-chip peripherals including a 16-bit central processing unit (CPU12), up to

    128K bytes of Flash EEPROM, up to 4K bytes of RAM, an asynchronous serial communications interface

    (SCI), a serial peripheral interface (SPI), an 8-channel 16-bit timer module (TIM), a 6-channel 8-bit pulse

    width modulator (PWM), an 8-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

    The MC9S12C128-Family members also feature a CAN 2.0 A, B software compatible module

    (MSCAN12).

    All MC9S12C-Family / MC9S12GC-Family devices feature full 16-bit data paths throughout. The

    inclusion of a PLL circuit allows power consumption and performance to be adjusted to suit operational

    requirements. In addition to the I/O ports available in each module, up to 10 dedicated I/O port bits are

    available with wake-up capability from stop or wait mode. The devices are available in 48-, 52-, and 80-

    pin QFP packages, with the 80-pin version pin compatible to the HCS12 A, B, and D Family derivatives.

    Introduction

    The MC9S12P family is an optimized, automotive, 16-bit microcontroller product line focused on lowcost,

    high-performance, and low pin-count. This family is intended to bridge between high-end 8-bit

    microcontrollers and high-performance 16-bit microcontrollers, such as the MC9S12XS family. The

    MC9S12P family is targeted at generic automotive applications requiring CAN or LIN/J2602

    communication. Typical examples of these applications include body controllers, occupant detection, door

    modules, seat controllers, RKE receivers, smart actuators, lighting modules, and smart junction boxes.

    The MC9S12P family uses many of the same features found on the MC9S12XS family, including error

    correction code (ECC) on flash memory, a separate data-flash module for diagnostic or data storage, a fast

    analog-to-digital converter (ATD) and a frequency modulated phase locked loop (IPLL) that improves the

    EMC performance.

    The MC9S12P family deliver all the advantages and efficiencies of a 16-bit MCU while retaining the low

    cost, power consumption, EMC, and code-size efficiency advantages currently enjoyed by users of

    Freescale’s existing 8-bit and 16-bit MCU families. Like the MC9S12XS family, the MC9S12P family run

    16-bit wide accesses without wait states for all peripherals and memories. The MC9S12P family is

    available in 80-pin QFP, 64-pin LQFP, and 48-pin QFN package options and aims to maximize pin

    compatibility with the MC9S12XS family. In addition to the I/O ports available in each module, further

    I/O ports are available with interrupt capability allowing wake-up from stop or wait modes.

    Overview

    Freescale Semiconductor's digital signal controllers (DSC) combine the ease-of-programming provided

    by a microcontroller unit (MCU) with the signal processing power and efficiency of a digital signal

    processor (DSP). The microprocessor-style programming model and optimized instruction set

    allow straightforward generation of efficient, compact code for both DSP and MCU applications.

    The 56F8100 and 56F8300 series are based on the 56800E digital signal controller core that utilizes

    a Harvard architecture consisting of three execution units operating in parallel, allowing as many as six

    operations per instruction cycle. From the broad portfolio of pin-compatible components with various

    combinations of peripheral modules, memory densities and clock speeds, system designers will

    find an ideal component to create their product.

    The 56F8100 series was developed for price-sensitive industrial and consumer applications.

    Devices in the series are ideal for applications requiring intensive computation (for example,

    advanced motor control while handling incoming data). Industrial scenarios include digital power

    conversion, three-phase motor control, power monitoring and building control. Consumer

    applications include electric lawn equipment or exercise equipment such as a treadmill.

    The 56F8100 series includes 40 MIPS processing power, on-chip flash memory and a full assortment 

    of analog and digital peripherals. For applications that require more performance, features, controller

    area network (CAN) connectivity or an extended temperature range, Freescale also offers the

    pin-compatible 56F8300 series.
